Umar bin Khattab came from Bani Adi, one of the groups of Quraysh tribe, the largest tribe in Mecca at that time. His father was Khattab bin Nufail Al Shimh Al Quraisyi and mother Hantamah binti Hashim, from Bani Makhzum.

Umar bin Khattab had a nickname given by the Prophet Muhammad as "Al-Faruq" meaning people who can separate between truth and falsehood.

When the Prophet Muhammad spread Islam openly in Mecca, Umar reacted very antipathy against him. Umar was the most of their opponents into account, this is because Umar that already has an excellent reputation as a war strategy and a soldier were very tough in every battle he went through.

At the height of hatred against the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, Umar decided to try to kill the Prophet Muhammad, but when on his way he met with one of the followers of the Prophet Muhammad named Nu'aim bin Abdullah.

Nu'aim bin Abdullah then gave her the news that, sister Umar had embraced Islam, the teachings brought by Prophet Muhammad who was wanted to kill.

Because of the news, Umar was surprised, and went home with the intent to punish his sister.

It was narrated that 'Umar met his sister was reading a letter Thoha Quran verses 1-8, he is getting angry about this matter, then hit his sister.

When Umar saw her sister's bloody by the blow he was filled with pity, and then requested that the passage he could see.

Narrated Umar being shaken by what he read, some time after the incident Umar declared embracing Islam, of course, this makes almost the whole of Mecca surprised, because a famous person most vehemently opposed and most ruthless in torturing the followers of Prophet Muhammad then embraced who hated them.

Consequently Umar excluded from the association Mecca and he was no longer respected by officials from Quraish who is known for always defend him.

In the year 622 AD, with the Prophet Muhammad Umar and other Muslims emigrated to Madinah. He was also involved in the battle of Badr, Uhud, Khaybar and raids into Syria.

Umar is considered as a most respected by the Muslims at the time because in addition to its reputation that is known since pre-Islamic times, also because he was known as the front man who always defended the Prophet Muhammad and Islam at every opportunity, even he without a doubt against his old comrades who were there with them, he took tortured followers of Prophet Muhammad.

During the caliphate of Abu Bakr, Umar is one of his advisers. After the death of Abu Bakr in 634, Umar appointed to replace Abu Bakr as the Caliph in Islamic history.

During the reign of Umar, the rule of Islam is growing very rapidly. Islam took over most of Mesopotamia and Persia from the hands of the Persian Sassanid dynasty and take over Egypt, Palestine, Syria, North Africa and Armenia from the Roman Empire (Byzantium).

At that time there were two superpower, namely the Persians and Romans. But both have been conquered by the Islamic caliphate under the leadership of Umar.

Umar perform many administrative reforms and close control of public policy, including building administration system for the newly conquered areas. He also ordered the holding of a census in the whole territory of Islam.

In 638, he ordered it to expand and renovate the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. He also began the process of codification of Islamic law.

Umar is known of his simple life style, rather than adopt the lifestyle and appearance of the rulers of that era, he remained very simple life.

At about year 17 Hijri, the fourth year caliphate, Umar decreed that Islamic calendar should start to count when the event moved.

  1. When you find a blemish on someone and you want chided, then chided the one you are. Because the more you reproach him.
  2. If you wish to be hostile to someone, it is hostile to your stomach first. Because there is no more dangerous enemy to you other than the stomach.
  3. If you want to praise someone, praise be to Allah. Because no human being more in giving you more polite and gentle to you than Allah.
  4. If you want to leave something, then leave the pleasure of the world. Because if you leave it, it means you are laudable.
  5. If you are getting ready for something, then be prepared to die. Because if you are not prepared to die, you will suffer, loss, and regret.
  6. If you want to claim something, then demanded the one hereafter. Because you will not get it except to looking for it.
